INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

I am a focusing-oriented psychotherapist and certified schema therapist who offers short-term and longer-term psychotherapy for children, adolescents, and adults. I draw upon various psychological approaches according to the problem presented and my assessment of what may best benefit you.  Sometimes more than one approach can be helpful in dealing with a certain situation.

I am trained in various evidence-based psychotherapies, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). I care deeply about my clients and their well-being and provide services suited to their presenting needs.

My interest in trauma, attachment, emotion, and body-based experiential therapies has led me to receive further training in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) , Emotion Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), and most recently Internal Family Systems (IFS). There are similarities between these therapies, and all of these theories integrate Focusing. Focusing believes that people have an innate ability to know themselves, explore and learn about their true selves, and possess the answers in themselves, that they are seeking.

After our first few sessions, I will be able to offer you some impressions of what our work could include based on how I understand your goals and needs.  I can also provide referrals to other resources, including another therapist who may be a better match for helping you meet your goals.  I do not provide either custody evaluation or recommendations.

My approach is supportive, compassionate, integrative, and healing oriented.  I integrate creative arts,  mindfulness, and somatic approaches. I focus on attuning to both the cognitive and emotional experiences of my clients. I draw from body-centered therapies that teach us that we are all wired for growth and healing.

HELLO AND WELCOME!

I came to mindfulness through Yoga practice when I was 18 years old. .Later reading the books of Karen Horney I found Zen.  As a young adult in my early 20's I wanted to become a psychoanalyst. I attended the Karen Horney Clinic for my own self-analysis and later the  American Institute for Psychoanalytic Institute for a one-year psychoanalytic psychotherapy training before I left to complete my doctorate.

Karen Horney was way ahead of her times in the 1950's when she met Shunryu Suzuki a Sōtō Zen monk, and teacher who helped popularize Zen Buddhism in the United States. Karen Horney believed that psychoanalysis and Zen could be integrated because of their many similarities.   Later, I trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and years later in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy both incorporate mindfulness

The roots of mindfulness come from the contemplative practices of all world religions. These religious traditions and scientific findings show the benefits of “allowing” and relating to our experience rather than struggling with it and avoiding them.

I hold a teaching meditation certificate from Shambhala Meditation Center of New York and a restorative yoga certificate from Integral Yoga studio in New York City. I have trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) with Jon Kabat-Zinn.

Integrating mindfulness with my love for contemplative photography. I completed the Nalanda Miksang level 1 training with Miriam Hall at Shambhala. I attended the Summer Institute of the Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education at the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society to share this practice in higher education.

WHAT IS FOCUSING

I am a Focusing-Oriented psychotherapist and Focusing trainer, and focusing is part of my everyday life.  I teach Focusing to all of my students at  Touro College Graduate School of Social Work. I offer introductory focusing workshops on Focusing and on Focusing and the creative process, particularly writing.  I came to Focusing when I was creating a new course for graduate students at New York University in the late 1990s when I was a professor there.  I was researching therapeutic presence,  and my research led me to Focusing.  I read Eugene Gendlin’s book “Focusing” and later recommended it to everyone I met. Focusing made sense to me.  I took my first course on focusing with Anne Weiser Cornell and then joined psychotherapist and focusing trainer, Charlotte Howorth Focusing-Oriented two-year training

So what is Focusing?

Focusing was developed by Eugene Gendlin and others in Chicago in the 1960s, the following work with Carl Rogers and Richard McKeon.  Dr. Eugene Gendlin wrote, Focusing is a way of “unlocking the wisdom of your body.” Focusing is about holding a kind of open, non-judging attention to an internal knowing which is directly experienced but is not yet in words. So, Focusing is an inward way of listening to our body's wisdom.   It involves open, mindful, non-judging attention to our internal knowing, which is directly experienced, but it is not yet in words. Focusing can help you become clear on what you want or need, to obtain insight or healing into a situation.

For me, Focusing is a mindfulness-based somatic approach that consists of specific steps for getting a body sense of how you are about any issues in your life. The body sense might be vague at first, but later becomes clear like “butterflies in my stomach” or “tightness in my throat” and as you pay attention you open to words and images and you begin to experience a physical change in the way that the life issue or concerns are being lived in the body. With focusing, we learn to listen to our body's wisdom to live in a deeper place with ourselves and issues as they arise.  Focusing is incorporated into many therapeutic modalities including Emotion-Focused Therapy, AEDP, Internal Family Systems, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, ACT, and others.

Focusing is developed through continuous practice through an individual partnership or through workshops. I offer both guided sessions and workshops, to schedule a session, please contact me. If I am not available, please contact the Focusing Institute.

I am deeply grateful for all of the Focusing teachers and peer focusers I met and who have continued to be wise teachers and friends. With gratitude to Eugene T. Gendlin, and my teachers Ann Weiser Cornell Ph.D., Lynn Preston,  and Charlotte Howorth, and my lifelong Focusing partner Kim.

MY DREAM JOURNEY

I have been working with dreams for as long as I remember. As a child, a dream of la Virgencita de la Altagracia, the Patron saint of the Dominican Republic was to be a reminder that I was loved by her, my guardian angels, and my loved ones on the other side. It was so meaningful to me whenever I had a dream with her. When  I was eighteen years old,  I was introduced to Jung and Freud in a psychology course. I read  Carl Jung’s Dreams and Freud’s  “The Interpretation of Dreams”. I started my dream journal then, keeping notes to understand my dreams and my life further. It was in 1979 when I discovered the work of Tony Crisp, and his book “Do You Dream?” that I developed a new connection to my dreams, which was then strengthened by my dream reading the work of Fritz Perls, "every part of the dream is a part of you" and his book "Suenos y Existencia", and the work of  Calvin Hall. and his book The Meaning of Dreams helped gain more insight into the power of my dreams. When I was 21 years old, a dream about birds led me (by coincidence) to the Theosophical Society in New York City, there a local magazine with birds on the cover advertised a weekly dream workshop led by Dr.  William R. Stimson author of Dreams for Self Discovery. His weekly Friday Dream Workshop in Chelsea, and the teachings of his mentor, Montague Ullman, author of Appreciating Dreams: A Group Approach, and Working with Dreams,  led to a fruitful period in my own dreamwork which continues until this day.  Now, working as an Associate Professor at Touro College Graduate School of Social Work where I teach clinical social work practice, I am fortunate to teach Expressive Arts in Social Work Practice and I share with students the power of dreamwork in their practice and in their lives.

In the early 1980s, every Friday night, I was fortunate to participate in Dr. Stimson's dream group. I was impressed by Dr. Stimson's knowledge of dreams, and his commitment to teaching others about dreams. I was privileged to have met many well know dream leaders from  Dr. Ullman to Patricia Garfield, and other notable dream leaders who influenced how I work with dreams.  At the time, he edited a little dream newsletter, The Dream Network, which he created in his home during a time when there was no World Wide Web. I have saved every one of these newsletters.  I am a focusing oriented psychotherapist and trainer, and I have been deeply influenced by the work Eugene Gendlin’s author of “Let Your Body Interpret Your Dreams”,  and Arnold Mindel’s “Dream body” both are body-oriented integrative approaches that have taught me to let my body assist me in further understanding of my dreams.  Other influential writers also shaped my knowledge of dreams, Stanley Krippner, author of "Dreamtime and Dream Work: Decoding the Language of the Night”, as well, I loved the work of Anne Faraday, author of Dream Power, and Justina Lasley Honoring the Dream: A Handbook for Dream Group Leaders and her book, Wake Up!:  which teaches us to wake up to the wisdom of our dreams

In 2008, I coincidentally bumped into the work of  Robert Moss author of "The Three "Only" Things: Tapping the Power of Dreams, Coincidence, and Imagination".  which led me to train in his Active Dream method which integrates Ullman's technique.  This merging of Ullman's technique is upsetting for many of the Ullman followers who want to maintain faithful to Ullman's method pure. I shall be hosting a workshop on Montague Ullman's book to review with all of you what this model looks like and the controversy around its use.  It is understandable for his followers to protect his methodology, kind of like Freud getting angry at Jung for moving away from his Psychoanalysis and creating his own Jungian Psychoanalysis.  I have to admit that I run Active Dream Circles, I find them so much fun, they deliver tangible takeaways, and like Robert Moss says, "they embody guidance, energy for healing and creation from stories we share." I  incorporate my dream life experience in the work I do, from my Zen meditation practice and the spiritual beliefs I grew up with, all of me integrated into my dream practice, and I wish that for you too.

I hope "all of you" feel welcome here too. I am inclusive. I  value all dream methods, and no one method is better than another. We are all in the process of self-discovery. Every dream method will bring new insights. In the end, only you know what your dream means to you and your dreams will guide to where you need to be.  In my Dream Book Club, we will feature the work of other dream leaders in the community starting with  Robert Moss "The Three "Only" Things: Tapping the Power of Dreams, Coincidence, and Imagination"  to Montague Ullman and later William R.  Stimson, author of Dreams for Self Discovery.  Please stay in touch with our Dream club to know what book we are reviewing.

Below you will see Digital Story, the Path of Wisdom, created in at the Digital Story Center. It starts with a dream. This digital story was created in 2007 in honor of my job as a Director of Counseling at Lehman College/CUNY. I am no longer at Lehman College, but my work there was a reminder that work can be healing, that it can be a joy, there was not a day that I did not wake up happy to go to work. Thank you Lehman College/CUNY and the people I have met there, the jewels in my life.  The Story Center
