GET TO KNOW ME

Hello and welcome! My name is Annecy Baez, and I am a trauma-informed, focusing-oriented schema therapist, educator, and writer. I have been practicing psychotherapy for more than thirty years, providing individual, family, and group psychotherapy to children, adolescents, and their families in diverse inpatient, and outpatient settings, college mental health settings, and private practice.

My work is grounded in trauma-informed healing-oriented, body-centered, and anti-oppressive practices.  I integrate expressive arts, particularly therapeutic writing,  dreamwork,  bibliotherapy/poetry therapy, visual journaling, and SoulCollage. I have trained in various evidence-based psychotherapies, such as Schema Therapy,  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Focusing and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR).  A lifelong learner, I draw from new developing theories in attachment, emotion, neuroscience, and body-based experiential therapies as well as acceptance and mindfulness-based approaches.

I have trained in integrative body-centered, trauma-informed approaches that focus on attuning to both the cognitive and emotional experiences of clients. I draw upon various psychological approaches according to the problem presented and my assessment of what may best benefit you.  Sometimes more than one approach can be helpful in dealing with a certain situation.

I am a lifelong learner interested in integrative body-centered, trauma-informed approaches that focus on attuning to both the cognitive and emotional experiences of clients. My interest in trauma, emotion,  attachment, and body-based experiential therapies has led me to receive further training in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), Emotion Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), and most recently Internal Family Systems (IFS). I have also received training from Sloan Kettering on Meaning-Centered Psychotherapy. and on Complicated Grief from the Center for Complicated Grief at Columbia University.

I provide  psycho-educational workshop on many of these theories: An Introduction to Focusing (El Focusing, o La Pausa), Awareness, Courage, and Love (ACL),  Introduction to Dreams (Significado de los sueños), and Schema Therapy, “Love me, Don’t Leave Me,”  and “Breaking Negative Thinking Patterns,” and “Breaking Negative Thinking Patterns in Relationships,” Please see Bibliotherapy tab for these listings.  In addition, I offer an  Introduction to Acceptance Commitment Therapy in Everyday Live (Acceptación y el Compromiso en la Vida Diaria, ACT)  and mindfulness meditation classes in Spanish, Meditacion al Alcance de Todos.

As a poet, and a writer, I value the use of creative arts for healing. I am a facilitator of   SoulCollage®  and  A Window Between Worlds Facilitator, to see upcoming offers please check my calendar of events.

My approach is supportive, compassionate, and trauma-informed. I incorporate creative coping strategies in my therapeutic work. I integrate creative coping strategies, expressive arts, mindfulness, and somatic approaches. I draw from experiential and body-centered therapies that teach us that we are all wired for growth and healing. With mindfulness and acceptance, I provide a safe place, free of judgment where you can share openly and honestly. It is my hope that our work together will support you. I welcome you here and look forward to meeting you.

HOW I WORK

Journaling Questions

I am very aware of time.  Not everyone calling for psychotherapy services is interested in long-term psychological change of life patterns, for this reason, I offer single-session consultation or a mini commitment of 4-6 sessions or extended therapy sessions of 12 to more sessions. If more is needed, we review goals and recontract for a number of sessions with a future review.

Here are some steps and questions to guide you as to the quality of the work we will be doing. Even if you never call me, I hope these questions open up space to begin the process of self care and attention to what needs to be attended to.  You may want to find a notebook or journal and write the answers to these questions, this is a self reflective practice very similar to what I would ask of you during our work together. In our first session,  I want to know who you are and what you need, what you hope from coming to see me. Here are some questions I ask throughout our work starting with the first session.

Step 1: Making Contact – Ask yourself:

Who am I and Where am I right now?

I am a visiting or do I want to stay longer?

What commitment am I willing to make?

Step 2: Creating a commitment

What do you require of me professionally?

What do I ask of you as a client?

Are you willing?  Are you ready?

Step 3: What are your hopes?

What do you hope to gain?

What was your previous experience with therapy and counseling?

What do you fear?

How will you stop yourself from getting what you want?

Step 4: Telling “the story”

What brought you here now?

Where have you been?

How was it for you then?

Step 5: The theme of your life

What keeps happening again and again?

If there is a life pattern, how was it learnt?

What do you need to re-learn?

So, what work is needed now?

Are you willing? Are you ready?

Step 6: Reviewing the commitment: What’s Next?

Shall we continue?

What are the alternative?

Have  the goals  changed?

How shall we work together now?
