Visual Poetry: The Art of Digital Collage

Updated: Apr 19, 2020

I am a self- taught mixed media paper collage and digital collage artist who uses images to represent a dream like magical world of multiple realities where images speak in the silence. I use images intuitively to reflect a world that lies between the surreal and the magical, between the reality and the imagination. I call these images Visual Poetry, as the dream world of images is poetic, and my work is intuitive, and dream inspired.

Although my intuitive digital collages are visual, they are wordless, but in this space they speak. I feel that there is a narrative that can be created by each image, either poetically or in creative writing. Willard Bhon, defined Visual Poetry as the “poetry that is meant to be seen – Poetry that presupposes a viewer as well as reader.” In my case, it can incorporate a writer, who can view the images, engage with it, and create their own stories or poems, or art in response to it. I find that art is interactive, another form of narrative practice, another way of dreaming, connecting, and healing.

I created this flyer for a workshop I was facilitating last year on the art of intuitive digital collage. I have been creating paper collages for years, creating them as gifts, or as covers of notebooks for my friends. I created digital collages after taking an online course on digital collages back when Photoshop was in it's early beginnings. Then in January 2019, Shelly Klammer created a 30 day intuitive digital collage challenge. I learned so much about art making, intuition, and the freedom of having faith in the process. It is all about the process, in trust that art gives birth in the silence of the body, and faith in that part of you that connects with something unknowable, wordless, ancient and healing. Each collage brought me to a greater wholeness, a greater knoweldge of myself. Trust. Faith. Each one told a stories. Please stay posted for World Collage Day on 5/9, I hope to have a virtual museum posted that you can visit. For more information email me at annecybaez@me.com
