The Journey
I studied artists who had devised techniques of simplicity: a circle, a square and triangle, a line here and there. A self-taught artist, I decided to take a collage art workshop with Jonathan Talbot, that was in 2002. I loved his work, the minimalism. I loved collage.
Jonathan Talbot was the first collage class I ever took. Mostly, I read about collages and then made them. It didn’t matter how long they took or if anyone liked them, there was a compulsion to create them as is the case with digital collages.
With Jonathan, I wanted to see if I could design little simple collages, and I did in his workshop.
The work was hand made collages on water color paper. He had old newspapers and postcards from early 1900’s that I was afraid to tear up or use, but I did. I did a beautiful collage, my late husband’s favorite, but it got ruined a bit, if I find it, I shall share. For now, I have the freedom series I created then after 9/11.
After we created them in these square water color paper, he would press them on a presser in his art studio, so pressed they were it didn’t look like a hand made collage, but a smooth collage, but bumpy like its original.
My learning eye has transferred what I learned into my present digital collage. Intuitive collage making is about your unique way of seeing, allowing the flow of knowing to express itself on paper, a trust and faith in the process. The inner critic silenced. Awed.
Jonathan Talbot created little Patrin. A Patrin, a marker used by wanders to tell of direction. The art of others can be seen as a marker, a sign, a guide to direct you to your own work. Jonathan showed us examples. His own work could be seen as a call for adventure.
Let anything you find here be a call to your creative journey, you can use what you see to create your own vision, this is how we learn. The universe is endless. You create the way you see the world, how you manifest it in a photo, a digital collage, a poem or story is unique to your experience. Honor that. And honor the work if others too, if you right click give credit to what you found, where you found it and who it belongs too.
Life is such a journey, every day a new learning experience, every obstacle and opportunity for growth, so sit today and begin the journey of creation.
